“Hell is empty and all the devils are HERE.” – William Shakespeare

Trick and Treat! Halloween is right around the corner.Ghosts, vampires, witches, bats, spiders, and monsters. It’s Halloween’s festivity and terror all mixed up in one delightful day. And naturally, it’s everybody’s favorite time to watch a good horror film. Here is a list of the perfect horror movies that would make the ambience around you even more spooky this Halloween. These movies are going to be outright horrifying.

1. The Exorcist, 1973

The horror movie buffs swear by the original 1973 classic. None of the sequels and prequels managed to live up to the original Exorcist. The Exorcist drives its mysterious theme with phenomenal special effects and a scary atmosphere, resulting in one of the scariest films of all time.

“Let Jesus fuck you, let Jesus fuck you. Let him fuck you.”

2. The Conjuring

Well-crafted and bloodcurdlingly creepy, The Conjuring ratchets up fright through a series of effective old-school scares. It is one of the best movies I have seen in the past few years. Horror as a genre is pretty hard to excel this movie keeps you hooked to the screen throughout the movie and you would be scared even after the credits roll.

“When the music stops, you’ll see him in the mirror standing behind you.”

3. The Shinning

Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining is an eerie, often flamboyant journey into absurdity depicted by an unforgettable turn from Jack Nicholson. Jack Nicholson’s performance alone characterizes this daunting motion picture. Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining may stray away from the original novel, but the film’s disturbing tone and psychological blasts are memorable to the viewers till date.

“Lloyd: What will you be drinking, sir?
Jack Torrance: Hair of the dog that bit me, Lloyd.”

4. Annabelle: Creation

Annabelle: Creation another strong chapter of the Conjuring franchise and it further substantiates the fact that freaky-looking dolls still remain a reliable way to scare the viewers. Much more effective than the first Annabelle movie, this is a prequel that stood out. The movie lacks cheap horror thrills and cliches but still manages to build tension mostly through the use of excellent cinematography and direction relying on a creepy mystery that slowly grows to become something that the viewers would remember for days.

She was taken from us at an early age. We prayed to see our beloved girl again. The contact started small, but then it wanted permission to move into a doll so that it could be with us forever. We said yes.”

5. Insidious

Well directed and certainly one of the most chilling movies I have seen. This horror movie exactly knows how to avert the clichés and maintain a perpetual pressure instead of going for the cheap scares. It really knows how to scare the hell out of the viewers.

“Last night I watched myself sleep. Then I flew away”

6. The Omen

A milestone of diabolic cinema. The Omen contains some of the most indelible untimely deaths in cinematic history. All allusions to prophecy and the Antichrist aside, The Omen achieves its horrors the antique way. Entertaining and yes, still menacing after all these years.

“Did I scare you, Mommy? I didn’t mean to.”

7. Get Out

The horror that’s way too real. Get out is much more than the sheer scare fest. It has its own darkly satiric tone. Jordan Peele knows how to make the viewers feel uncomfortable and uptight by combining humour and psychological horror. The way he tackles the nuances of daily-life racism is applaudable.

“Man, I told you not to go in that house.”

8. It Comes At Night

Highly endorsed by people who love psychological horror. When the movie comes to an end, you will release the breath you had been inadvertently holding throughout the movie. The dynamic movie conceptualizes a small slice of doomsday with an appalling believability.

“Why is your mask on? Nobody’s sick here.”

9.The Blair Witch Project

With all your dark childhood fears suddenly revealing themselves, this movie is full of eerie campfire scares. The very crudeness of the film and the technique used to shot the film contribute majorly to the feeling that things are out of control. The Blair Witch Project keeps audiences in the dark about its nominal villain. Thus proving that imagination can be as scary as anything onscreen.

“I’m afraid to close my eyes, I’m afraid to open them.”

10. Sinister

A horror flick that will instill horror in you.The movie will come with an ending that most of the viewers would find difficult to digest. This movie surely delivers its fair share of satanic twists. Enough, to give you a sleepless night.

11. The Babadook

A simple yet spine chilling tale with such profound psychological and emotional scope that trades on the ways in which the prospects of maternal failure can be just as fearsome as any monster under the bed.
